God and Satan: An Editorial Piece

Arm Wrestle or Arm Union?

After listening to Biffy Clyro's God and Satan, I got thinking.
Just listen to this first line:

"I talk to God as much as I talk to Satan, because I want to hear both sides."

For some reason, I found this really powerful. Just think, throughout time religion has always been very biased toward the God side of things. Even the bad stuff, like the floods and plagues were supposedly him "teaching us a lesson". But could it not be that certain things aren't as Black and White as the bible makes it out to be? That often things happen because God just felt like being a jerk? Or Satan's just a misunderstood angel, crying out for help?  Now I'm not a religious guy myself, and I don't want to offend anyone here, but I'd like to go a little deeper with this.


          Ever heard the phrase, "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"? Take Nelson Mandela, for example. What he did for South Africa was phenomenal and stopping the apartheid and putting an end to a lot of racial prejudices was no easy task. But this figure of public appreciation and respect isn't just one huge beam of human goodness. Back in the 60's, Nelson helped wage a huge guerrilla war against the apartheid government, in which the majority of casualties were civilians and innocents. And yet, because he won, everyone seems to forget this fact. Obviously, Nelson regrets his violations on human rights, and is deeply apologetic of his past actions, but you can see that this is a very two sided argument.

  To a certain extent the same could be said about Bin Laden, but I won't get into that right now. The point is that things are never "that simple", because if everyone didn't agree with an idea then it would never take off. So when these rules are applied to the big man in the sky, things start to get a little complicated. See, because religion is purely based on Faith, everything God supposedly does is for a reason, which makes it very hard to prove otherwise. Rather like religion itself, funny enough.

All for a reason... Apparently.

    If all the God and Satan stuff is real, then surely there are those who believe what Satan is doing is right. The way I see it, it's like communism. It's a good idea which could work with a lot of effort and trust, but because of western world leaders believing otherwise (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), we all strongly disagree with it. Much how the majority of us hate Satan, when we don't properly know what he's all about. (Oh and by the way, I do not support Satanism in any way, shape or form.)

     Although it may be a bit risqué to right out call God a fascist dictator, that  won a war against Satan, you have to admit it's certainly an interesting idea. After all, if Hitler had won WWII, wouldn't we all be heiling and marching, strongly against the "evil" democratic idea. Which is where a certain "The bible is propaganda"  theory comes into play. But this may be getting away from the point.

    Who's to say they're not just both on the same side?  Maybe they're the same guy; a Gollum/Smeagol deal, you know - Just a schizophrenic loony in the sky? Or perhaps they are, as religion describes it, just the incarnations of pure good and evil. Who knows, maybe the universe is just one big chess game between the two of them.

Let's just hope they don't reach Checkmate...

    So next time you hear a bible-basher going off on one, spare a thought to the alternative ideas - That the moral compass of their mystic God might not always be on track, that there's always two-sides to every story or even that it could all be God's evil indoctrination plan? Alternatively you can just call it all bull, and move on with your life. Your choice.
